Mentor Training

Turn your mentors into coaches...

Mentor training through the Australian Women's Mentoring Network focuses on a combination of mentoring and coaching techniques which form the basics of supportive communication and the definition, management and achievement of goals.

Workshops can be customised for your particular situation and are usually 3hrs or full-day in length.  Alternatively, one-on-one training for individual mentors can also be arranged.

Mentor Training
Duration: Half-day (3hrs)
This workshop focuses on the basics of mentoring. Topics covered include what is mentoring, who needs it, the first meeting and how to manage it, roles & responsibilities of mentors and mentees, setting up a formal or informal mentoring agreement, setting goals and strategies, maintaining motivation and management of the mentoring process, completion of mentoring and troubleshooting. The workshop is interactive and includes individual and group exercises.

Mentor/Mentee Workshop
Duration: Full-day (9am-4pm)
The Mentor/Mentee workshop is for both mentors and mentees and can be used to initiate their first meeting. This workshop covers the same topics as the mentor training workshop but focuses on getting the partnership going. Mentors will work with their mentees (or role play if they are not in a mentoring partnership yet) throughout the day, learn how to set up an agreement on how they will structure their mentoring, discuss and set priorities and goals and begin work on strategies for achieving the goals. This workshop is designed to kickstart the mentoring process and answer any questions participants have about the what and how of mentoring once having commenced their mentoring. The workshop is very interactive and includes individual and group exercises. A recommended sequel to this workshop is the Mentors as Coaches workshop.

Mentors as Coaches
Duration: Full-day (9am-4pm) or Half-day (3hrs)
The benefits of coaching are now widely acknowledged – in particular, an approach which combines both mentoring and coaching can produce excellent results for both mentor and mentee. This workshop focuses on teaching the mentor coaching skills which will help drive their mentoring, and enhance their own leadership and management skills. Topics covered in this workshop include the difference between mentoring and coaching, an in-depth investigation on how to identify and set realistic goals, how to set strategies and keep your mentee on track, how to communicate and listen as a coach, and how to go the extra mile to help your mentee achieve success. The mentors will work on identifying and designing their own goals and strategies during this workshop, so they can see first-hand how the process works. Thus the workshop is also a coaching session for the mentors themselves. The workshop is very interactive and includes individual exercises.

Mentor and mentee workshops and individual training can be arranged  around Australia.
